Description and history of diving

A group of three small springs in Barran Td, Co. Cavan; the risings for Pollnagossan. The northern spring is presently used as a garden water feature; in the corner of the field to the south is another small and apparently static spring (middle spring); in the middle of the next field is the southern-most spring, impenetrable.

A dive of 5 metres to a tree-root barrier was reported in 1994. It is presumed that this was in the middle spring, but the report only mentions one spring in Barran.

Middle Spring

22-10-2010 - diver A. Kennedy; sherpa É. Lankford

A tiny and apparently static pool against a small outcrop gives access to the constricted sump. Diving in zero visibility, head-first initially then feet first, the base of the sump was excavated to allow greater movement. However the way on is blocked after 1.5 body-lengths by a flat slab. The gap above the slab is too tight. It may be possible to remove the slab.
