Previous records

J C Coleman, 'Caves in the Cong area of Galway and Mayo', Irish Geography, vol. 3, no. 2, 1955.

  • Notes four risings on the northern edge of Cong. This is the most easterly, Poll-leibin. From east to west the risings are Poll-leibin, Pollavuarleale, Polltoofil, and Pollahostia. (C.f. OS 6 inch map series.)

Martyn Farr, pers. com., August 2008.

Notes

A water level gauge and a ring of boulders marks the rising.

Pool sides slopes to -4.5 m, where vertically-sided joint about 1 m wide descends to -8 m. From here the passage slopes downwards into the cave, until a constriction and high flow at -18 m prevents further progress. Passage is clean, with sand and small boulders on the bottom. Flow makes entering the cave difficult. A pike, an eel, and some perch or roach have been seen in the cave.

Recent dives

18-08-2008 - divers AK, YA

Reached -8 m against strong currents.

27-09-2008 - divers Al Kennedy, Paul Doig

First dive led by AK turned at -17 m when a large quantity of boulders slid down on his legs, giving him a fright and destroying the visibility; belay at -8 m also pulled off, leaving line very slack. Second dive led by PD reached -18 m, where a good belay on the left wall was immediately followed by a constriction when the walls of the passage closed down. Passage section was larger above but could not be passed due to high flow. Probably also the limit previously reached by Martyn Farr.
