Notes

Coleman records four risings on the northern edge of Cong by their Irish names (Poll-leiben, Pollavuarleale, Polltoofill and Pollahostia).

Two walled bays beside road for fishermen mark rising and provide access.

Local report of a truck having crashed into the rising.

Sides are loose, boulders with silt in upper part, boulders with sand deeper. General rubbish present and monofilament fishing line. Gets dark very quickly and has a quite intimidating atmosphere.

Recent dives

27-09-2008 - divers Al Kennedy, Paul Doig

Belaying below the fishing bays, we dived down a loose slope littered with rubbish. Passed a traffic cone at -12 m, moved right to a wall at -17 m where strong flow from below was noted. Traversing left to try and escape flow, a second traffic cone was reached, which was thought to be the first. Concluding that we were going in circles the dive was turned. 40 m of line had been laid, but it was unclear whether any overhead had been entered. Visibililty was several metres, the rising was very dark and intimidating. Deciding that the way on lay into the flow along the right-hand wall discovered on the first dive, a second dive was made directly to this area. En-route I was entangled several times in monofilament line, but reached the wall and found a metal sign-post embedded in a concrete base. Checking that it was secure, I belayed to it and started to move on, becoming entangled in more monofilament line. While trying to cut my way out of this the sign-post collapsed on my back. Feeling a bit stressed after escaping the line and the sign I turned the dive and we retreated. Again it was unclear whether we had entered the cave.
